bracket Bridgeport Softball League Championship Bridgeport Pizza & Beer/Players and manager Mark Melice took on Franzone's Pizza in the championship game of the Bridgeport Softball League. Franzone's came out of the loser bracket and had to beat the Players twice to win the Title. Franzone's exploded in the first two innings, to take a 17-1 lead. The bats and the hearts of the Players team were tested, and they almost pulled this one out. The Players came all the way back with some timely hitting by Andy Gelet, Ty Jones, Jason Washington and Todd Keeley. Going into the bottom of the seventh with Franzone's leading 18-16 with two outs and runners at 1st and 2nd, Andy Gelet smacks a single to left center, the runner from second scores to make it 18-17, John Hoffman the runner from first base rounds second base and heads to third base only to get gunned down to end the game 18-17 asTy Jones sat on deck awaiting his at bat which he never had. The victory by Franzones forced the "if" game the following night. Franzone's wins the coin flip and is home team. The players stormed out of the gate to score four runs in the top half of the first inning. The inning was highlighted by Jason Washington's three run bomb to leftfield. Franzone's countered with two in the bottom of the first. The game went back and forth until the seventh inning. The score was tied at 10 and Franzones batting in th ebottom half of the 7th inning. Franzone's had a runner on first with one out. Franzone's Tito Barajas hits a single to left field, Geno Irio boots the ball away, the runner from first advances to third on the booted ball. Geno picks the ball and the runner runs for home. The throw comes into the catcher John Basmajian who makes a great catch and tag! Pitcher Mark Melice gets the 3rd out as they head into the 8th inning. Players Todd Keeley hits a short pop up along the third base side. The pitcher drops the ball while in fair play and the ball falls away from him. Meanwhile Todd Keeley is running to 2nd base, the catcher throws to second and Todd keeps running to third and the ball goes out of play. The end result was an infield "homerun". The Players now led Franzones 11-10. Pitcher Melice shuts down Franzones in the bottom half of the 8th inning to nail down the league title.
